About the Org

Who is the KC Handmaid Army?

We are a collective of Kansas City area residents who choose anonymity. We don’t have public leaders, board members, or spokespeople. our uniforms speak for us.

Are you affiliated with a political party?

No. We are non-partisan. We don’t endorse candidates, donate to campaigns, or align with any party. The threats we organize against, including threats to bodily autonomy, civil liberties, and democratic norms, predate any current administration and will outlast it.

Is this an antifa group?

No, we are not antifa in the typical sense. We are non-violent and our protest is silent, public, legal, and visible. But we are unapologetically against fascism. The uniform does the talking.

Why “Handmaids”? What’s the symbolism?

The red cloak and white bonnet come from Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, a novel about a theocratic regime that reduces women to reproductive property. We wear them because the silhouette is unmistakable, the silence is louder than chanting, and the message lands without explanation. When you see a Handmaid, you already know.

Joining & Participating

How do I join?

Use the Enlist Now form. We’ll add you to our private communications. Joining means we know how to reach you about events. It does not mean public membership, mailing lists, or pressure to attend anything.

Do I have to be a woman to participate?

No. Anyone who supports our mission, including bodily autonomy, civil liberties, and democratic norms, is welcome to march. The cloak and bonnet are a uniform, not a gender. We have allies of every identity.

Where do I get my uniform? and What is the uniform exactly?

The Handmaid uniform is a red, hooded cloak with a white bonnet. we also recommend a face mask:

What if I can’t afford a uniform?

Reach out via Enlist Now and tell us. We have community resources to help. No one is turned away from a march for lack of a uniform.

Is there a vetting process?

For showing up at a public march, no. Public actions are open. For ongoing involvement and private communications, we keep our community small and trust based. We may ask how you found us. here is a copy of our code of conduct and our roles & responsibilities.

Safety & Legal

Is this safe? Will I be doxxed?

We take anonymity seriously. The cloak and bonnet conceal identity by design. We do not photograph out of uniform or name participants. We do not publish member lists. We ask attendees to remove identifying jewelry and cover tattoos, and to buddy up at events when possible. That said, any public protest carries some risk. We can’t guarantee safety, only that we’re organized to minimize it.

What if the police show up?

Our marches are silent, legal, and on public property. There is no lawful basis for arrest. If officers approach, be respectful. do not participate in any actions instigating law enforcement or other destructive behaviors. there are usually legal observers at every event.

Do you do anything besides marches?

Marches are our primary action. We occasionally support related civic causes, but our identity is silent, public protest.

When and where is the next event?
